Tidewater Arts Outreach presents the fifth annual Sea Level Singer/Songwriter Festival—a homegrown Norfolk, Virginia music festival that takes place in restaurants and theaters in and around Ghent. Original, live music will be in abundance throughout the weekend of April 5–7, 2012, in the form of street buskers, an outdoor music stage, afternoon concerts in area eateries, and several flagship events. Kicking off the festival is an evening of great music at the Naro Cinema, featuring Shelby Lynne. Opening for Shelby is local blues singer and fingerstyle guitarist Seth Stainback.

About the Artists:

Shelby Lynne is a genre-defying American singer/ songwriter with 13 albums to her credit. With the critical success and recognition of her 1999 album I Am Shelby Lynne, she was awarded the Best New Artist Grammy Award in 2000. Her high-charting 2008 album Just a Little Lovin’ paid tribute to Dusty Springfield and established Lynne’s talents as a song interpreter as well as a writer. She has since started her own independent record label, Everso Records, and has released three albums: Tears, Lies and Alibis, Merry Christmas and Revelation Road.

Her appearance at the Sea Level Singer/Songwriter Festival is part of her first-ever international solo acoustic tour that will mirror the intimacy of her latest release, Revelation Road, which has appeared on numerous top 10 lists of 2011. MOJO, Uncut and AmericanSongwriter.com each awarded Revelation Road four stars.

Seth Stainback

Seth Stainback is a gifted singer/songwriter who paints vivid pictures of an old-soul world he must have known in a past life. His decidedly Southern compositions combine with his soulful voice, speaking the grit of Texas and the troubled heart of Carolina, the places of his youth. Seth carries a powerful charisma in his live performances, while his honesty and authenticity send gooseflesh through the house. He sings in the first person of being a fugitive, a sinner, or a repentant, heartbroken heartbreaker with a glint of murder on his mind. A finalist in the 2010 Sea Level Emerging Artist contest, his debut record will be released this coming April.

Additional information is available at SethStainback.com.

Remembering Don WomackDon Womack

On January 29 our band of friends, collectively known as the Sea Level Festival Committee, lost a great member and true friend. Don leaves us, far too soon, with sadness at his sudden passing but also with fond memories of his wry humor, funny stories, thoughtful and considerate demeanor, and larger-than-life persona.

Don was so excited to have been able to secure Shelby Lynne for our 5th annual festival, which he did just over a week before his passing. He cherished his role as Festival Star Talent Procurement Agent. He regularly went above and beyond to protect the festival’s best interests. We were all so lucky to have had this opportunity to work with him, and to be able to give him the chance to make meaningful contributions toward an event and cause he loved. What many of us did not know was that Don had enjoyed a wealth of concert, event and artist management successes during his career.

True to form, Don did not want a memorial church service—he wanted a big ol’ party, with lots of friends playing music, plenty of great food and free-flowing libations. Doodah's Day - A Celebration of Life Remembering Don Womack will take place on Sunday, Feb 19th
at the old Waterside Listening Room (Dockmaster's) inside Waterside in Norfolk, VA from 4:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. For more information, please visit the Facebook Event page.

Thanks for keeping Don’s laughter and enlightenment in your hearts, and your favorite Frank Zappa song in your pocket. We will miss you, good buddy.

We are honored that Don’s passion for music and TAO’s mission to bring music and arts to people who don’t have access to arts experiences resonated so strongly with him that his family suggests donations to TAO be made in his memory. To make a gift to Tidewater Arts Outreach in Don’s honor, click the “donate” button, above right, and you will be prompted for a secure donation by credit card.  You can also mail your gift to Tidewater Arts Outreach, at the address below. Thank you.
