The musicians and artists, board and volunteers are passionate about their commitment to bring music, arts, healing and hope to our neighbors who live with disability, illness, infirmity, crisis or other situations that remove them from mainstream community life that many of us take for granted.

Since 2004, Tidewater Arts Outreach has brought invaluable community resources through artists, instructors and performers to engage creatively and meaningfully with these special audiences.

Tidewater Arts Outreach programs and volunteers create dramatic changes for people at more than 60 facilities throughout Hampton Roads. Art classes offer engagement and inspiration. Musicians share songs that unlock memories and create smiles. Dance programs bring out the youth and vitality in many. Week in and week out, Tidewater Arts Outreach programs share the transformative healing power of the arts, and reinforce the importance of our work.

The demand for our services grows daily, and there are waiting lists of places to serve and artists who want to serve. In 2008, Tidewater Arts Outreach, through its 200 artists and volunteers, reached more than 4,441 people through 179 programs in shelters, hospitals and nursing homes.

We live in tough economic times, and are asked to do "more with less." We keep overhead to a bare minimum, so we can pour our energies into reaching the greatest number of people with quality, impactful and enlightening programs. Your support means we can continue to bring inspiration, healing and hope to thousands of people we serve each year.

On behalf of our board of directors, thank you for joining with us and making a donation today to support our work. The instruments to heal are your hands.

$60 helps to bring a teacher and her assistant to present a fine arts workshop at an assisted living facility.
$100 helps send an artist to sing, play or instruct at one of 60 Hampton Roads facilities.
$300 funds coordination, supplies, artist fees and follow-up for one program.
$500 pays artist stipends for approximately one month.
$1000 provides musicians, artists and performers at twenty or more programs or performances, or might create an entire series of classes for special needs populations.

Host a TAO Event

A Friend of TAO House Concert is a fun and very meaningful way to be of service to Tidewater Arts Outreach. Following is an outline of the division of all the duties required to host a concert. Host duties are negotiable; we want this program to be enjoyable for everyone involved. We hope to generate between $1,000 and $1500 gross income at each concert, which is between 40 and 60 guests.

Friend of TAO:

  • Provide venue for small concert (could be your house, yard, neighborhood hall,
    place of business etc.)
  • Provide mailing list for 40-60 guests depending on size of venue
  • TAO can mail invitations, or you can mail invitations
  • Handle reservations, checks and attendee list
  • Act as host/hostess for event (we’ll be behind the scenes doing the kitchen and serving work).
  • Can help with purchasing refreshments if desired

TAO:

  • Provides invitations and handles mailing
  • TAO can mail to additional invitees off its list, if needed and at a later date than the first mailing
  • Coordinates performances with musicians
  • Provides agreed-upon refreshments (can include wine, coffee, home baked desserts, cheese/crackers, etc.)
  • Provides service as needed (wine glasses, paper products)
  • Brings up to 75 chairs
  • Assists with staffing

The purpose of the concerts is to raise awareness, and funds, for Tidewater Arts Outreach. The events are ticketed (usually $25 but can vary dependent upon occasion/artist) to provide compensation for the artists and proceeds for TAO. A brief explanation about the organization and why we are doing these concerts will be done as part of the introduction or during intermission. Artists and TAO will sell CDs. We will encourage people to sign our “Friends” list to build our database. We also will make introductory remarks about the artists and Tidewater Arts Outreach, invite guests to attend a TAO program and ask them to consider becoming involved in the organization.

Host a TAO Program

You don’t have to be a musician or artists to be part of a TAO program. As a Program Host, you can provide valuable service and enjoy great music, arts and performances, at the same time. Please review our position description and see if this might be a good fit for you. The first step is to review our schedule of programs, select a nursing home or assisted living facility program to attend, and notify TAO at TWartsoutreach@cox.net, so we can make necessary arrangements.

TAO Wish List

  • Acoustic guitars for donation to youth shelters
  • Percussion instruments
  • Art paper and supplies
  • Raffle items of $50 value or greater
  • Dorm refrigerator
  • Buffet table with legs
  • Wooden coat rack

Contact us and let us know how you can help.
