Testimonials...

Our audiences and clients are special. Our artists sing, play, draw and dance with retired doctors, scientists, janitors, broadway showgirls, pilots, school teachers and truck drivers.  Our clients reflect the community at large and include cooks, comediennes, executives, artists and caregivers. In nursing homes, many are in wheelchairs. Some are amputees. Some are over 100 years old. Some have dementia; quite a few are nonverbal. Some make inappropriate noises, comments or actions. They are so very appreciative of our visits and the music and art they are asked to partake in. They love to see new faces and to be involved and related to. And they truly appreciate being able to sing, play, draw, laugh, dance in their wheelchairs and see one another react to the new people and stimuli that TAO programs provide. They thank us for thinking of them and ask us when we will be back. Here are some of the things they had to say:

"The best feeling I’ve had in years."
Poetry workshop participant, Transitions Family Violence Program

"One resident who has low interaction with group was very excited."
Autumn Care of Portsmouth

"Loved the instruments and the singers were so friendly and upbeat! Such a positive experience. Thank you!"
Harbor Pointe Nursing Home

"They ask when the next music night will be. The kids really look forward to it."
FORkids, inc.

"The residents had themselves a very good time. It was very nice to have extra instruments for the residents to play. They really enjoyed the music and wanted to hear more."
Beacon Shores Nursing Home.

"Our Alzheimer’s residents reacted in a variety of ways – from some shouting 'Bravo!' to hands clapping and feet tapping, even from our usually unresponsive residents."
Virginia Beach Estates

TAO Artist Sign-Up

We recruit talented artists, performers, singers and musicians, from schools, associations, libraries and other arts nonprofits, to present a variety of arts performances and activities. Program stipends are funding-dependent and may be available. Here are just some of the opportunities:

  • Several music students form a combo to perform at a nursing home
  • Music activity with a Head Start program
Art or music lessons to youths living at a group home
  • Drama or dance performance at a homeless shelter, detention center or nursing home
  • Hold recitals or arts showings/receptions at an assisted living facility
  • Sing-alongs at a community center for developmentally-disabled adults
  • We need volunteers to serve as program hosts, at special events and as office support. Volunteers are a vital part of Tidewater Arts Outreach. They help to bring more performances and arts activities to people living in institutions.

Yes! I'd like to become a TAO Artist!
