Artist Workshops

In conjunction with the Sea Level Singer/Songwriter Festival, TAO will present workshops in dance exercise, visual arts and music.  A panel discussion, geared to TAO artists, will share tips on how to break down barriers of age and ability so that service delivery is enhanced.  TAO caregivers, volunteers and artists are invited to attend.  Workshop fees are noted below.

  • BrainDance©: Friday, April 1, 9:30 a.m.

Participants will learn to teach a series of physical exercises designed to imitate movements made by infants in the first year of life, which are shown to be tied to human brain activity and development. Easily adaptable to many levels of ability, these movements have been shown to help develop and restore balance, attention, memory, sensory integration, motor skills, respiration, flexibility, posture, and mind-body coordination.

Location: Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital
Cost: free to TAO artists; $5 for others.
    RSVP to [email protected]

  • Visual Arts and Identity: Friday April 8, 4:00 p.m.

This workshop features visual arts project ideas for seniors that are autobiographical in nature such as identity collages and visual journaling.  Workshop participants will design projects that provide seniors with a source of creative self-expression while encouraging long and short-term memory, fine and gross motor coordination, self-awareness and personal identity, and group interaction.

Location:  Premier Gallery, 2119 Colonial Avenue, Ghent.
Cost:  $10 for TAO artists; $15 for others, materials included.
    RSVP to [email protected]

  • Vocalization: Saturday, April 9, 11:15 a.m.

This series of musical exercises hones vocal techniques such as posture, breath, enunciation, and musical range.  Workshop participants will learn to develop musical vocalization exercises for seniors suffering from linguistic impairment that are creative, fun, therapeutic and restorative.

    Location:  511 Boissevain Avenue, Ghent
Cost:  Free to TAO artists; $5 for others.
    RSVP to [email protected]

  • Songwriting Workshop with Julie Clark: Saturday, April 9, 1–3 p.m.

Julie will lead a workshop on "Metaphor in Songwriting."  What are metaphors and why do they matter? Join her (with pen and paper in-hand) for an artistic exploration of how metaphors are built and what makes the metaphor effective (original vs. cliché). This workshop pertains to poetry writing as well. Half of the $25 registration fee will benefit Tidewater Arts Outreach.

    Location:  511 Boissevain Street, Ghent
    Cost:  $25
    Register to [email protected]

  • Musician Song Swap:  Sunday, April 10, 1 pm

TAO musicians and those interested in becoming TAO musicians are invited to share songs that are appropriate for singing seniors.  Musicians bring their acoustic instrument of choice, and their three favorite songs to present in an in-the-round environment.  We’ll all have copies of your music, so it’s a sing-along, play along circle of music and friendship.  RSVP to [email protected] and send an electronic version of your music, so we can make attendee copies.

    Location: To be determined
Cost: free with donation to TAO.
    RSVP to [email protected].
